Hamilton sets records at Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton, rode into the chequered flag at Silverstone in one hour 30 minutes and 621 seconds.

For Mercedes it was a one two at the Silverstone with Valtteri Bottas taking the first runner up with his team mate on the high podium. With the Silverstone win Hamilton he took all the four British Grands Prix since Formula One switched to turbo-hybrid. The Silverstone win has also made Hamilton’s name now count alongside Jim Clark and Alain Prost – the only drivers to have won five British Grands Prix. He also equaled Clark’s record of four successive home wins. At the Silverstone circuit, Hamilton recorded his 57th win, the 110th podium finish and his 162nd finish in the points. He matched Jenson Button for a joint fourth all time, according to the commentators.

He matched Clark’s record for the most Grand Slams (pole position, fastest lap, win and lead in every lap).

The Silverstone loss for Sebastian Vettel resulted in major loss in points.

The onus is on Hamilton to keep winning the races. That is the only way to earn the team’s trust and confidence.

At the race, Hamilton looked in fine form setting fastest laps for fun. Hamilton later told the media and his supporters in a lighter vein that he became unstoppable because he owned Silverstone.

Such was the crowd support for Hamilton that roar could be heard halfway to Milton Keynes when Hamilton drove through the complex of Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel for the 51st and last time.

His arch rival and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel had a painful bad afternoon. He had to engage in a duel with Max Verstappen. Then he suffered a slice of the his front-left tyre shredding off that left him in seventh place. With one race left before a four-week summer break, the title battle could not be more delicately poised.

Streaking away from pole, Hamilton did not skip a beat. Wolff reflected that the criticism of his antics in the Greek islands had simply made him “stronger”.

Vettel suffered brake problems and had to be behind Max Verstappen. Daniil Kvyat took out Carlos Sainz Jnr, his Toro Rosso team-mate.

Team Ferrari was not at its best at the weekend. However, they managed to salvage some pride. In the closing laps Raikonnen suffered a delamination and was forced into the pits. Then it was Vettel reporting a tyre puncture on the same side.
